Earth Day takes place on April 22 every year and marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement, which began in 1970. The first Earth Day saw 20 million Americans rallying for a healthy, sustainable environment across the country. The result of the inaugural year was the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.
Today, over a billion people across the world participate by planting trees, cleaning up their communities, connecting with elected officials, and more on behalf of the environment, making it the largest civic observance in the world. Since Earth Day’s inaugural year, the Earth Day Network has been able to execute successful campaigns on a variety of issues ranging from drinking water, wildlife endangerment, climate change and much more.
Earth Day Network launched a new campaign, A Billion Acts of Green®, in 2010 with the goal of registering one billion green actions in advance of the Rio+20 sustainable development conference in 2012. With the goal attained by Earth Day 2012, the campaign is seeking to achieve the next billion. These green acts can be anything from riding a bike instead of driving to volunteering at a community clean-up. For additional information, visit www.earthday.org/takeaction.
The Hilton Family of Hotels has committed to a number of reductions to its carbon footprint across all properties by the end of 2014, including; reduce energy consumption by 20%, reduce CO2 emissions by 20%, reduce waste output by 20% and reduce water consumptions by 10%. In addition, the Hilton Hotel family is continuing to pursue the development of sustainable building and operations as well as the advancement of renewable energy as a source of power for hotels globally.
At our hotel, the DoubleTree by Hilton Grand Junction has been selected to receive a Hilton Worldwide Travel with Purpose® Action Grant in the amount of $5,000 to complete an on-site Living Sustainably project! The Hilton Worldwide Travel with Purpose® Action Grant program was created as a way to recognize and support the excellent work that offices and properties lead in local communities, and to accelerate the impact of Travel with Purpose® around the world. A diverse panel of judges carefully reviewed the nearly 400 applications that were submitted this year, and awarded only 62 grants. We are thrilled to be a recipient of this grant, and look forward to starting our Community Gardens soon!
